DUBLIN the capital of Ireland. The Vikings,
the first settlers, gave Dublin its name, Duibhlinn, meaning 'Black
pool' because of the peat-blackened River Liffey. The Gaels who came
afterwards knew it as Baile Atha Cliath (the name seen on Dublin-post-marked
letters), which means 'Town of the Hurdled Ford', a name derived from
the act of an Ulster king who made a bridge of hurdles to cross the
swollen River Liffey. Dublin's 'fair city' is home to sweet 'Molly Malone',
'The Book of Kells' which is on display in the library of Trinity College
and of course the infamous Guinness Brewery where the 'black velvet'
is brewed to perfection.
