CLADDAGH was a city-within-a-city. The Claddagh's
waterfront of thatched and white-washed cabins where the Corrib River
enters Galway Bay in the west of Ireland has gone, along with its tough,
introverted fisher folk. The name today (it simply means 'beach') is
chiefly associated with the Claddagh Ring of joined hands clasping a
crowned heart. The symbol is loved and cherished all over the world
and goes back over three hundred years to a man named Richard Joyce
who lived in the little fishing village of the Claddagh. It was here
that Joyce first created the Claddagh Ring. He designed the heart to
represent love, the crown to represent loyalty and the hands to represent
friendship. Traditionally, the ring was used as an engagement ring by
the women of the village and then as a wedding ring. Click on The Story
of the Claddagh for more information. Tourism has adapted the design
for souvenir jewellery.
